Naming your kids

If you have kids, what are their names?

How did you pick them?

My son's name is Alan Paul.....
It's kind of a long story about how he got his name....
I wanted to name him David Paul after both his grandfathers....but in the Jewish faith, they will not name a child after someone who is living. The honor is reserved for someone who has died....and I'm not sure exactly what else there is to it. So since my dear father-in-law was still very much amongst the living, David was out. So then I wanted to name him Daniel Paul....and for about 12 hours in the hospital that's what his name was...until my husband came back the next day and I told him....Since my son was born at 11:26 PM and I didn't get out of recovery until after 2AM we didn't even discuss naming the baby that night.

When the proud father came to the hospital after work that day and I told him, he said "My father wants to name him Alan." My father-in-law's mother's name was Anna and somehow he saw Alan as being the name to honor his mother......although, I've NEVER seen the connection other than the fact that they both start with "A". lol!

So since I got the Paul for my father, I felt that I had to give in and let them have Alan. I've still always liked David and Daniel better. Two years later, when my oldest nephew was born, he became Daniel....and ironically, he's always been like a son to me.

My daughter is Jessica Ann....I liked Jessica and Ann was the only name at the time that I could think of to go with it. All her father's sister's names were just too Arabic sounding and didn't work. Ann also happens to be my middle name. If she had been a boy she would have been Jordan Christopher....her father didn't like it but I would have used it anyway....we weren't married so he wasn't getting a vote. LOL!

Actually, it's akin to wishing death on the person who's alive. It's also VERY bad luck,
case in point my grandparents named thier first child Arthur after my grandfather (who's name was Arthur). My greatgrandmother claimed that the "Evil Eye" would get them and PLEADED with them not to do it.
The child never made it to his first birthday. (okay, so it was 1948 and premies had like a 0% survival rate, but still!) 20 years later, when my father was in high school my grandfather was crippled in a motorcycle accident. My greatgrandmother ALWAYS claimed that he wouldn't have had such bad luck if they hadn't named the first child (long dead by this point) after himself.

As for using the First Initial to honor someone, it's rather common in Judaism. My name is Sharon and apparently I was named after my great-great grandfather Shmuel. (Samuel)

If I have a daughter either her first name or middle name will be Abigail in honor of my Grandfather. Another possibility is Emma Lee (I know it's REALLY southern!) in honor of my Grandma Lee.

I absolutly ADORE the names Aaron, David and Deborah. Unfortunatly my brother is Aaron, my uncle is David, and my mother is Deborah, all are still VERY MUCH alive!

THe flip side to the whole naming after the living thing, my Mother's brother is Michael. His son is Michael, Michael's daughter is Michelle and Michael's brother named his son Micheal. I also have a sister named Michelle.
Really, we need some originality here!!!
Though THANK GOD my grandfather STOPPED the privious tradition and didn't name his son Forrest (my grandfather was the 17th Forrest in the family!!!)

My son's name is Gaelen Neile. I wanted to name him Neil. His Dad would have nothing to do with it... but accepted it as a middle name. We had chosen a girls name no problem (Genevieve) so decided to go with a G name. Baby G. We found Galen in the name book, both liked it (means tranquil) and decided to adapt it to honor my sister... (Gael) so he is Gaelen.

My daughter is Lira Lonette. Lonette is her great-grandmothers name on her Dad's side. Lira (with a different spelling) is basically money. There is no Lira in the name book. :D But BOY does it suit her.

Cool stories!

I don't have kids and haven't really thought much about baby names, but I really do like your son's name Phos. I've always liked the name Galen and have been a huge admirer of a photographer named Galen Rowell (now deceased) for a long time. Nice to know what it means - I love the meaning of that name.

Maybe I'll have to start a baby name list to keep track. I've also always liked my brother's middle name - Cameron. So, that might be an option...except now it reminds me of the Cameron in the movie "Shallow Grave".

I dont have any kids yet, but we've had names picked out for awhile. We dont really have any good reason for most of the names we picked out, other than we like them.

A girl would be Shannon Michelle or Felicia Ann and a boy would be Tyler Joseph or Aiden Joseph.

I'm going to name my son with initials, like Johnny Cash was born JR Cash.
I'm going to name my son XX. The first initial being the first letter of my father's name, and the second initial being the first letter of my name.

My oldest son's name is Bryson which I choose because his dad's name is Brian. You know Brian's son? We were already seperated at the time and I did know what I was doing. Thankfully I still love Bryson's name. Although much to my dismay...it is becoming "trendy". Fucksake's.

Jason is Jason because Bryson and I lobbyied for that name.

If Jason was a girl we were going to name her McKenna for Mark and Jenna put together. I am certain I wrote that somewhere else here......*scratches chin*.

I grew up with Jennifer. BLECH!! There were 8 Jennifer's in my grade 1 glass and they had to split the grades 1,2 to make it so there weren't so many Jennifer's. I can't believe people are still naming their daughter's Jennifer. Everyone should ask a Jennifer about the name. I hate being called Jen. Boring, bland, unpretty and masculine sounding. Hate it.

My oldest is Tristin Jayde. Tristin was after the cutest little girl we met while we were dating and Jayde is after my ex-husband's dad. Jay.

My youngest is Gianna Skye. Since Tristin was named after her paternal grandfather we named Gianna after my dad. My dad's first name is Johnny although he goes by Greg. Gianni is the Italian version of Johnny and Gianna is the female version. We pretty much call her Johnna. It's only when I'm trying to get her attention that I pronounce her name fully. I really wanted Gianna Tatum, but the ex wouldn't go for it. I'm still not satisifed with her middle name.

Now, my ex-husband and his new wife are expecting a child and do you know what name they've decided on? Jayden.....boy or girl. ????? I feel like that is such a crappy thing to do. Why make Tristin's name less important and how many people need to be named after his dad?

Oh well. *shrugs*

Adam and I discussed a few names and I actually had a dream that we had a baby girl together and named her Lotus, which I really like. I'm kind of out of the baby naming thing though.

Yes, I remember my mother-in-law saying that but I was never quite sure if that was the true belief or something that she cooked up in her rather odd way of thinking about things. Honestly, it seems rather silly to me. But I adored my father-in-law and wanted him to be blessed with a long, happy life....which he was.

i have a Rebekkah Charles hebrew spelling just added the extra "k", Samantha Marem .Marem came to me in a dream my godmother Mary and my grandmother Emma were standing in front of me talking to me so i didn't want to call her Mary Emma too old for the times so i put mar-em together, Hannah because after 8 years i was told i couldn't have children and i remembered Hannah in the Bibile how she prayed for her son Samuel when she was barren her prayers were answered so were mine and Damian just loved the name sounded strong ---no not the Omen

GS, that's a great list! I love Ruby, Maya, Sadie, and Ella. I thought about naming my daughter Ella as well (after Ella Fitzgerald), and then my son can be Louis. :D

We are still set on Emma and Zachary, except now we've decided to give the baby a Chinese middle name in honor of his/her half-Chinese heritage. :)

I know what you mean about needing names that "fit" well--we wanted a name that will go well with Hubby's kids' names, which is hard because they are very Irish. Oh well. *shrug*

My G-mom's name is Ella, beautiful name.
I have recently discovered my G/F's middle name online accidentally. I just suprised her with it last night and I told her I want to name our first son Brandon after me and his middle name Lee like her middle name.

Personally I like having a not-so common name, Imelda that is. I've always thought that if I had kids, I'd like to give them a more unique name so their name stands out from the rest of the kids names on roll call. Last thing you want is to be Michael #3 or Brian #2 in the class. Always thought that would be annoying.

Though I'd have to do some searching as to what names i like. I'd like them also to be able to sound nice if pronouced in Spanish since I'm Mexican and I'd like my mom and dad to say my child's name and have it sound nice!

But no worries yet since I'm no way close to having a kid ;)

I named my daughter *Brandi* after a song in the 70's. Hey I was only 16
Lucky for me she grew up in to a beautiful woman who is married to a youth pastor and didn't end up a stripper... LOL. My first son I named *Anthony* because I never met a Tony I didn't like. Funny because he has never met a stranger and most people love him on sight. My youngest son I named *Troy* just because I thought it was a cool name, and guess what? He is pretty cool :) Yeah, I am a proud momma....

A lot of great name's here , good thread.

Well, GS's list got me thinking... I love the name Ruby. If you want a good name to go with that, my son's great grandmother was Pearl. I love that name. :D

Boys names I've always loved, aside from the obvious (Gaelen :D ), are Liam, Neile, Alejandro, Isaac, Mitchell, and Richard. My daughter has a great uncle with an unusual, but  name... Broadus. And I'll always love Lawrence. Lawrence and Richard are both family names, but ones I don't see as typically used anymore.

BTW: Emzak, I LOVE the Ella and Louis names. Just LOVE them. :D

Hubby and I were in a bookstore last night and looked at a name book. While we still really like Shannon, Shanna sounds pretty cool to.

We want somewhat unique names, but not one that no one can pronounce or spell. I've seen shannon spelled Sheonnaon. Now who in their right mind is ever going to spell that childs name right? I like unique, but not totally out there.

fos4snt
07-02-2006, 05:32 PM
Well, in defense of unique spellings... it's very rare someone spells Melanie correct. Melaine, Melony, Melonie, Melany, Melody. MAN it's annoying. :o And it's NOT either an unusual name or an unusual spelling! Sheesh.

And most people are confused by my daughters name. When she tells them what it is, people always get it wrong ~ like they think she's mispronoucing it? And if they try to spell it, they almost always get it wrong, too. OH WELL! Lira. Not Lyra, not Leera. ;) But, it is an unusual name, but DAMN does it suit her.

I remember one of my old coworkers, she had a couple grandkids and one of them was named Milana (er, or Malana). After a while, I really liked that name and I still like it. Though I found out later when I told this to my sister that her and her husband were thinking if they had a girl they would name her Milan. SO I was like daaaaaaamn. Name is taken. It would be strange if they had a daughter and I had a daughter at some point and there was a Milan and a Milana. Too similar.

well my name is Maria, and believe me i dont want such a common name for my child/ren.

we have talked about it and eric likes a spanish name for our children whether it is first or medium name, i agree so they never forget they are lucky to be half spanish and half american, but i also like some briton names like: Nolwenn, Oanell and some arabic names like Nawal (means gift), Nasmah (breeze) and some italian names such as Ciara.

He is half german too so maybe a spanish and a german name would be nice :)

i have thought more about girl names but i am sure it will be a boy dang :p

I like Alec, Patrick, Alejandro, Nathan, Ethan, he likes Pablo lol

I want to pick something both american and spanish people can pronounce quite good :D

I think picking out an uncommon name that is easy to pronounce is the ideal. I wouldnt want my kid to have the same name as everyone else. It gets confusing. My nephews new girlfriend has a two year old with the same name as his 4 year old...talk about confusing.

I also wouldnt want our child to never have anyone pronounce their name correctly the first time. Opens them up for teasing, and it kind of sucks to always have to explain how your name is pronounced.

Geez, names are tough.

I love the name Alejandro. One of our neighbors in the old hood had a kid named Alejandro, and another neighbor (also spanish) told me his name was Alex. I later found out it was Alejandro and I teased him... "Why didn't you tell me your REAL name?" "Well, most american's can't pronounce it correctly, so I just say Alex." I said, "But, you've heard me calling little Alejandro by HIS name, I would have happily called you by YOUR given name, too!" :D I called them both Alejandro after that. There is something delicious about how that name rolls off the tongue. AlleHanDrrrro. Love the rolling R's. ;) Feels SO good to say it right, too.

Out here in BFN, where I live now, we had a neighbor up until recently. Marco. I loved hearing him say his name. Marrrrrrco. The lovely roll of the R. It's part of why I find Spanish, as a language, so sexy. :D

Michael Jacob (for his maternal great grandfather and his paternal great grandfather)

ABout the "r" in spanish, heh i never call Eric the way you all do, i jsut do it with my spanish "r", i tried to pronounce it properly but he just told me not to cause he likes it that way. :D what is funny is he has learnt to pronounce Maria the way we do here, and not how he said it before :p

There are some beautiful names out there, but as missy said, it is tough to pick one!

When I have children, I'll give them a Japanese name. :) if I have a daughter, she would be named Akane (pronounced ah-kah-nay, meaning rosy sky), or maybe Liena (stemming from "Rie", which commonly means "reason" and "gift").

By the way, my name is Erika -- it's Japanese, believe it or not. "E" the character stands for "blessed" or "gift", "ri" stands for "knowledge", and "ka" means "flower" (wildflower, according to mom). I love my name. :D
