Management sucks

No not MTAG management Em! :p

Maybe its just the military structure and since I have never experienced any other management maybe it doesnt apply... but they sure do have to trust their own people more often and keep their noses out of things.. it would run much better.

So we have a weapons conference in Orlando... a semi-annual event with the major players in the large-weapons community in the Coast Guard. Two days into it... my boss's boss here in Baltimore is raising a stink that was passed down from HQ. They are wondering why we are holding a conference at Disney World... not Orlando mind you... but Disney World. So they suspect we arent being good stewards of the tax payer's dollar. It turns out the Captain who raised the first stink was one who claimed he never found out about it... but the official message was clearly addressed to his office... well.. because one of his own people showed. So since he doesnt read the message board he didnt get to come to sunny florida and play golf at the resort.. and hence he whines.

HQ regulary holds conferences at Crystal city in DC which exceeds the perdiem of Orlando by a longshot. Holding it in Orlando saved us $9000 over that spot. We saved about the same in Vegas last conference. So we had to do a cost analysis and produce savings which we did today and shoved it right up his O-6 academy ass. We always pick major airport hubs and it always depends on who is coming from where and how many etc... the resort in orlando was Shades of Green.. a military only resort.. was $83 a night... no tax... no one had to rent cars etc...

I control a 14 mill budget... and I surely dont buy $500 toilet seats. (Hammers are another thing altogether :p )

They call our HQ the "puzzle palace" and now I clearly understand why.

Phew...Glad to hear that! :D

Seriously though, that sucks about what happened. I, too, get frustrated with bad management. In my case, it's my law school administration.

In my corporate world, I came to the disillussioning realization that 90% of our day is creating perception and cya. Only 10% is real work.

I learned a long time ago, for example, to let the office go sh%% when I'm out instead of checking in to keep things on track. That way, they think they need me by noticing the difference when I'm out. And it has to be that way, because when I check and keep things on track when I'm out, management says when I come back "things worked well when you weren't here so why do we need you?" No appreciation for keeping the ship on course when I'm on vacation or going the extra mile on my own time. Just, the dumb perception I'm not needed.

It is all very f**ked up but seems to be the way of the world.

Maybe people like us need to be in business for ourself.

By the way, I read both the Bamford books about the puzzle palace and they were great!
