SierraNevada 02-27-2006, 12:26 PM OK...the last of my 4 wisdom teeth is NOT coming out today. Its *gasp* infected. I had it "drained". I have to take some antibiotics and its coming out next week. Every time I go to the dentist, he tries to "save" my impacted wisdom teeth, which basically means, I poke around at it and don't try to take it out today. Invariably, all four now have subsequently gotten infected, and had to be hosed down with penicillin and taken out anyway.
The last wisdom tooth extraction took nearly an hour, and his hand hurt so bad, he had to push back his next appointment before he could work again. My favorite part is when he puts his foot on the chair for leverage.
skibunny 02-27-2006, 12:42 PM I had my 15 front teeth knocked out when I was 12.
beat THAT suckazzzzz!
So, yes, I HATE the dentist. I spend WAY too much time there. Esp considering most of my teeth are fake.
skibunny 02-27-2006, 12:44 PM Crap. I was supposed to blow some sunshine.
FEEL BETTER Sierra! Take advantage of all the drugs they give ya! :D :D :D There are some toothy smilies just for you!
SierraNevada 02-27-2006, 01:01 PM HOLY SHIT!!! How did you do that? Can I ask?
fos4snt 02-27-2006, 01:15 PM  YIKES ladies. I'm sorry for both of ya's mouth pains!!! EGADS!
I've only had: 7 teeth extracted (four bicuspids and 3 wisdom teeth ~ never got a fourth), 3.5 years of braces (I still have a minor overbite and crossbite), a gum graft (since the ortho "slipped" when taking off my braces and pulled up some of the gluey gum... he was pissed cuz I wasn't done, but yet I'd had ENOUGH)... but miracle of miracles, I've only had 3 cavities in my entire life. 2 before I turned 7, and 1 as an adult. I've had "sealers" most of my life and in my mid-20s, I had them redone ~ my cost. Who cares. I'll do it again in a few years. Cuz, that shit works.
Good luck to you, SN! EGADS!

Emzak 02-27-2006, 01:19 PM Ugh. I hate the dentist too.
But here's some sunshine for ya: at least we're lucky enough to have dental insurance! ;)
fos4snt 02-27-2006, 01:57 PM YEEHAW for Dental insurance! :D Even nicer when you have TWO plans. ;) I don't right now, but I have before... what one won't pay, the other usually does.

skibunny 02-27-2006, 02:04 PM For those who missed Lanners and me chatting about it...

See that nice big metal wheel behind me on the dock?
Well I was tubing behind a boat and crashed into it, face first.
SNAP.
Bye bye teeth.
(this pic was taken maybe two years prior)
fos4snt 02-27-2006, 02:53 PM OUCH!
Damn you were a cute kid!!! NOT that you aren't gorgeous now, but

christina923 02-27-2006, 03:52 PM yeah...a big ouch!!! it could have been worse i guess...
SN...just one more to go, then a new dentist ;) i've never heard of any dentist trying to "save them"
plus that story about an hour in the chair... kinda scared me and my $10,000 tooth that just had a partial root amputation that's not doing to well, and probably will get pulled sometime...
chikygrl13 02-27-2006, 04:29 PM I had my four wisdom teeth extracted when I was 20. When I finnally lost 40 lbs and couldn't sleep for weeks at a times, cause my teeth hurt so bad (I could not eat solid food for 6 months!!!!!) my Dad finally realized that they needed to come out. They were all infected and abseced.
Had braces for 6 years, then my wisdom teeth came in and turned my teeth, now I need braces AGAIN!!!
Had 2 root canals about 3 years ago, in between the appointments my dentist decided to drop dead!! (Seriously apparently he had a brain tumor and didn't know it) So now I need two caps.
Seeing a new dentist next week, Shane's gonna have to hold my hand through it, cause IT ALWAYS hurts!!!!!!!!!
((((((SN)))))
I hope your mouth feels better soon!
And  were you awake when he extracted your impacted wisdom tooth???
Mine were all impacted too. I had them all removed at once and I was knocked out for it. Then I was sick for a week after.
skibunny 02-27-2006, 10:10 PM I had a LOT of dental procedures done in my teens (for obvious reasons) but I also could NOT swallow pills at this time. This caused a bit of a problem.
When I had my wisdom teeth out, I didn't take ANY of the annti-pain/swelling meds.... I wound up missing like a week of school and being swollen and bleeding the whole time.
TAKE THE MEDICINE.
For my implants... they all went terribly except the one where they gave me an IV of valium. It's amazing what valium being pumped straight into your veins will do for you.
SierraNevada 02-27-2006, 10:28 PM Strangely enough, I never found it all that bad.
I had two out on top at once, I was awake. The third one was the impacted and infected bad one (on the botton), thats the one that took forever to get out. The one that's left had a cavity in it, so he filled it the day he pulled the other wisdom tooth. So now I'll have the last one out in 8 days and won't have to think about it. But all of them...so far, I took two advil...took a nap and they didn't even really hurt. I didn't even have to take advil the next day. They've so far hurt a lot more while they were in, versus after they've come out.
And Skibunny...my god, you poor thing. I would have cried for weeks.
skibunny 02-28-2006, 05:34 AM And Skibunny...my god, you poor thing. I would have cried for weeks.
what... doesnt everyone go to seventh grade for 4 weeks with no teeth?
And doesnt everyone have dentures from the age of 12-18? ;)
Nah I was a good sport, I think it made me a stronger person... although there are absolutely NO photos of me smiling for the 6 year span of my denture-wearing days.
Nasmah 02-28-2006, 10:24 AM first time i went to my current dentist (like 8 years ago) i saw a huge man and thought with those huge hands he would be as delicate as atilla the hun,but he turned out to be a great dentist. :)
yet i fear dentists so much,i would rather go to the gynecologist instead(which i hate too and have to go at least 2 a year cause i have an ovaric problem)...so whenever i have to go to the dentist i still hope he will ask me to sit on that chair and spread my legs instead! :D
jesique 02-28-2006, 02:16 PM OH MY GOODNESS!!!
Skibunny...I need to talk to you girl! All my top row of teeth are fake...with the exception of two (one on each side)...they hold my partial denture in. I wish I had something more permanent though...
I broke my partial in High School and had to go a week without it...I didn't talk..didn't smile...nothing for that whole week...which sucked cuz I love to talk! :D
I need to have the bottom teeth worked on...they're bad as well.
SN...I'm sorry to hear about your wisdom teeth...man that sucks. At least this is the last one so you'll be done with them!!! :D
Nadine.
I want insurance again...it's nice to have.
Ariel 02-28-2006, 11:36 PM Jeeze I feel so bad for all of you with dental problems!
SierraNevada....I cant believe they didnt put you out while they took your wisdom teeth out! I could not have gone through it without the general anesthesia!
I work for a dentist and I hear horror stories every week from people that had bad experiences as a child at a dentist.
I still cant understand why so many people are so afraid to go to the dentist? I hate going to the Doctor!
I think dentists were mean back in the day. When I was little they used to literally strap me down in the chair. And if that was common practice, then it's no wonder that so many adults don't like dentists.
fos4snt 03-01-2006, 10:04 AM I really liked my dentist as a kid... kept going to him, too, until I moved away for college. Had a few "meh" dentists down there who I didn't really care for... when I came back, I had my one cavity. My old dentist was nothing but a buttheaded JERK that time. OMG. He goes to put the novacaine in and I said, "OUCH OUCH OUCH" cuz, geez, it REALLY hurt and he told me to "stop being a baby!"
Well, turns out the asshole was novacaining a NERVE and damaged the hell out of it. No sensation returned to that entire side of my face for over 6 months!! It's really freaky weird drinking coffee and having half your tongue sense heat and the other think its cold. And having a half smile, like a Bell's Palsy patient or something. GOD that sucked. So now, I only see his partner, who is... *drool* not only gorgeous, but incredibly kind and understanding. Much more like my dentist USE to be when I was a kid.
Which reminds me that I need to make me and my kids appointments for general cleanings. My son, especially, since he has braces now... OH DANG, I should mention, that he no longer as ANY visible underbite. 2 months in braces and his teeth are lookin' GREAT. Just need to pull them together closer to make room for the rest of the adult teeth coming in. I'm REALLY impressed at how quickly the braces pulled that horrid underbite back in under his front teeth. YIPPEE. And... and... he's gettin' a nose now... no more pancake face. LOL

skibunny 03-01-2006, 10:07 AM i liked the dentist as a kid... cuz i didnt have any dental problems or cavaties... it was all the drills, needles, and tooth removal that tainted my view.
Momma Nessa 03-01-2006, 10:49 AM I Hate the dentist.
