ROAD TRIP!

That's right, the man and I are getting in the car 7 AM Thursday morning, and driving to FLA! WOOT! I'm not sure how far it is, 1200 miles really. But Bill and I are two people that love to take road trips together. We've done the cross country thing. We find the most interesting little side excursions. This country is totally strange, did you know that?

Some places we get run out of (see Oxford Mississippi) Some places invite us back (see Elk City, Oaklahoma) some places aren't all they are cracked up to be (see the Minnesota Iron range) some places we actually land in, and spend the night scared for our lives (see Pikeville, KY). Road trips are such great adventures, and usally cheaper and more exciting than flying. We never plan them out, its all a work in progress....although we've been thinking about hitting Plains, GA on the way down to see where everyone's favorite peanut farmer, Bad News Jimmy came from. Otherwise, it just comes to us whilst "on the road."

Anyother Merry Pranksters here? Or are you just the opposite? Some people don't last 10 minutes in a car with their SO. Bill and I could drive around the world!

We have never driven anywhere together more than 4-5 hours away... In August '04, we were supposed to drive from NY to CO for a wedding and a 3 weeks stay so I could meet his family and we could do some outdoorsy stuff... but I wound up getting a job in CO the month before so I drove out with my mom to move out here.

Then, with my job, I got 10 days vacation my first year. TEN DAYS. TOTAL. no 3 day weekends- I dont get holidays off... so if I wanted, like, MLK day off, I would have to use one of my vacation days... same with christmas, thanksgiving, etc...
So that didn't lend itself well to road trips.

I would love to go cross country with him sometime... now I have a few more days but my brother is getting married in NY in July so we are flying out for that, and we are flying to visit my parents in FL in March... so maybe we wont get to do it in the immediate future... but someday!

That sounds Awesome! I hope you guys have a great time!!!!!
Once a year Griffin and I drive to LA for their annual bonsai show and sale (we live in OK) It's really fun because we stop in Santa Fe and Las Vegas on the way. The whole trip takes about 3 weeks...and It's a lot of car time but I love it. We also spend about 1/3 of our time in Santa Fe for my gallery stuff...Road trips are my favorite!!!! I guess we don't get sick of each other because we're together all of the time anyway???

If you guys could go anywhere on your next vacation where would you go?

That sounds like so much fun. Sometimes the journey itself is more rewarding than the destination. Not to mention being able to share it with a soulmate.

Have fun!

I love RoadTrips! Alec and I were watching Animal House last night and we were talking about how we need to take a roadtrip with no destination. *grin*

We did the trip thing when I moved out here...2 and a half straight days in the truck...no stops except for food and potty. (and at night for sleep) It was interesting. We definately travel well together...but by the end of the third day ....I was rough...I needed to be done with driving. I felt and looked/acted like a zombie. *grin*

Well, considering I drive 120 miles a day, every day except Sunday (and sometimes Saturday), I am so very comfortable on the road and LOVE road trips in general. Went back in November up to see my friend, Jenna, in Canada. (Lovey @ ageless, although I didn't meet her there)... have driven with 5 kids to Disney, then again the same year with 3 teeners. I will hop in my car and drive just about anywhere and I have no complaints... except letting someone else drive. ROFLAO. I'm a horrible passenger. SO, whilst my butt might get sore, it sure beats driving someone else insane when my panicked passenger mode kicks in.

Tell 'em, Nessa, how STIFF and HORRIFIED I look when in a passenger seat!! ROFLAO. Seriously... I'd rather drive 15 hours straight then be a passenger and have butt cramps the entire way. But, I LOVE road trips.

HAVE A GREAT TIME!!! You do know, you can stop in the Charles Town area and catch a few races and a couple drinks with me and Litical, right? ;) ;)

and as much as I HATE being a passenger (can you tell why fossy and I are friends) I'd rather BE her passenger than have her be mine....

Fossy! We're gonna stop in Harpers Ferry on the way to Louisville for the Derby in May. Get a little history and then head over for the 7PM POST TIME!!! WOO HOO!!! I will totally be in touch, if you wanna drink some beer and play a card of horses!

Yeah, the Pikeville thing was a little touch and go for a while there. We saw this City Confidental show on Pikeville. The show is pretty demeaning to whatever town it profiles...even places like West Palm Beach, so no one should take it personally. But they made all these Appalachia cracks and stuff...so when it was finally aired, the good people of Pikeville went totally ape, the city council and the mayor wrote this 6 page letter and passed a resolution demanding an apology from A&E networks. As this comes over the AP news wire at my desk, I think its pretty funny. So I tell Bill we just found our side trip for the Kentucky Derby Road Trip this year. We're going to Appalachia to see who's right, A&E or the mayor of Pikeville. We eventually got into a bar and rib joint down there, and started talking to people. Its pretty obvious we're from up north, so some guys ask him why we came to Pikeville...and he actually told him the truth about the City Confidential show. This is something you can say to someone from the NYC or even New England...but...this DID not go over well. I tried to smooth it over with "Hey, there's no such thing as bad press!" but still, these guys went from nice to MEAN in all of five seconds. We got run out of the bar, and were too freaked out to go anywhere else, being like the ONLY car with a New York plate in
this entire town. I thought those guys were going to kill us.

Oh and to answers Sabine's question....in America...I would go to....
Pacific Northwest (WI, OR). Besides AK,HI, (and 'Bama, Kansas, Nebraska) that's all I got left before I have all the little magnets for my fridge!

Wow Sierra, I'm jealous!!!

I love road trips too. I'd love to do a cross-country one but I just don't see how I can get enough time-off to do that any time soon.

Gosh I wish I were more adventurous back in my post-college early years but nooooooooo, I wanted to play "grown-up" and tie myself down with a career ASAP. Now, I feel like I'm SUPPOSED to be a grown-up so I'm stuck.

Yes ma'am! I love me some roadtrippin! I've driven 24 hours from Texas to Colorado, 27 hours from Texas to Los Angeles, and 18 hours with a WONDERFUL friend from Los Angeles to Seattle! I'm the Queeeeeeen of roadtrips! I pack so many snacks and stuff to do, and I burn CDs to listen to, and I don't sleep at all! When we were driving home from Seattle, we decided to drive straight through instead of stopping because I had a flight to catch back to Texas. I remember driving and thinking..."Maybe proping your eyelids open with toothpicks DOES work..." But sunrise and sunset on the road...man, there's nothing like it!:D

I once rode a Greyhound bus from upstate New York to New Orleans for a whoppin' 36 hours. Does that count as a roadtrip? It was horrible!

christina...yeah, he did...I was like...man, say you gotta cousin here and make up a name or something. We went over to the West Virginia side of the river the next day. It was still a pretty good trip. :)

The trip will be 3 days driving to Miami, where we have a meeting. I'm not exactly necessary personnel, but since everyone other VP brings unecessary staff, I get be there, pretending most of the time to work, and schmoozing and listening and analyzing the rest of the time. Meetings start Sunday, but we'll be in Hollywood which is 3 miles from Gulfstream Park. I gotta head to the track Saturday for the Grade 2 Hutch (3 yo sprint stakes) and G3 Holy Bull (3yo route stakes). 2 very good, but very early Derby preps if you find yourself near an OTB saturday!
Then Thursday its off to Clearwater FL outside of Tampa Bay to hang out with my Grandparents for 4 days. Probably try to hit Tampa Bay Downs for a few older horse allowance races! Then we gotta roll over to Biloxi and hang out with Bill's sister. She works for FEMA, so she's been down there since Katrina. Then when head back home and work our way up the coast!
Most of my vacations get tied to our out of town meetings. Which is nice....gets us to a variety of places. The next one is in Detriot, but I'll probably talk another staff person into going and being the lackey for that one.

YAY SN... definitely pop in to see us... the Derby is on the 5th, right? Just have it be known, we're hoppin' a flight on the 6th, so on your way down would be best. ;)

And Christina, I hear Lynchburg is really cool, but being a Virginia girl (grew up in Reston, lived 6 years in Richmond and been all over the state ~ just recently hopped across the state line), be as close to Richmond as you can. It is really one of the coolest, hippest weird little cities (I mean, for a state capitol, its rather small) and I loved living there. You can still buy houses in Richmond and in the surrounding 100 mile vortex for a song! Northern Virginia is BLEH...

Elle- do you live in Denver? Holllllla back! :) A road trip to Vega sounds fun and definitely plausible... but I dont think my boyfriend is much of a Vegas guy... I'm the gambler! I've never been and he used to go a lot as a kid.

Yay! Road trips! I've done lots - some for work, some for school, some for fun. I've been all over Canada from BC to the Yukon, into Alaska, through Washington and Montana, and all the way east across Canada to Ontario (a few times).

I'm a bit hardcore for most people since I tend to want to keep driving - especially at night. Hehe...when I was coming home from Ontario the last time....I drove it by myself in 4 days (and I think it's just over 3000 miles). I was so sick (something to do with my diet of coffee and peanut butter cups I thing) when we (me and the dogs) got home and my butt had a cramp in it for days. It's funny to look back now - I had the car packed so full there was no room to sleep so I just slept in the driver's seat sitting upright

I just got back from a fabulous road trip with my man... we spent a few days in Philly and we had an awesome time. Even the trip there was enjoyable, despite the terrible traffic through DC on the way there and back.

Plus, the trip included a full body rub with lotion and candles... no complaints here ;)

Yay for road trips!
