I think we might have a dog!

Crysania

Wow...this happened fast! Two weeks ago I transported a lovely dog named Dahlia...she's some sort of flat-coated retreiver/border collie/something mix. She was awesome and they just put her up on their site for adoption. We submitted an application for her and they said we sound perfect for her! All they have to do is wait to hear from our new landlord (we hope -- we have to talk to him too *gulp*) and our references (no problem there). And if all goes well, Dahlia is ours!

Foreclosure dogs? What? Is this a new trend? Your home forecloses so you kick your dog to the curb?

From reading your posts I could feel how much having a dog means to you and I'm pleased that it may have come true for you - and that lucky girl!

Good luck with landlord etc.

By the way what is the 'big black dog syndrome'?

Sadly, yes. It's become all too common. :( Many dogs are ending up in shelters when people forclose on their house. And worse, many are being left behind, tied in the houses, sometimes without even food! It's like "oh our lives are now shit so we'll just make the dog's hell." In one case, people shoved their dog in a crate without food or water and left it in the house. There was a big bag of food right outside the cage but they purposely left it in the crate so it couldn't get to it! They found the dog dead in the house. :( It's becoming a HUGE problem. And a wonderful dog like Dahlia gets ditched!

She is a GORGEOUS dog and I totally don't blink at paying $250 to get her. She's well worth it!

It was REALLY quick! Quicker than we're totally ready for, but we'll figure things out! I filled out the application totally not expecting anything to happen. We're in such a crazy situation that I thought she'd take one look at it and say "no way!" Instead, she said that she's seen crazier and we'd be perfect!

We're just waiting to talk to hour (hopefully!) future landlord and if we can move in where we want to, we're all set. At least now we have a dog in mind and if he's worried about noise we can assure him that she's not a barker!

Big Black dog syndrome is a name they've given to the fact that big black dogs have a hard time getting adopted. They have a lot of theories as to why that happens. Expressions are harder to see, they're harder to see in photos if they post them on websites. Some people are more scared of large black dogs. All sorts of reasons, but more black dogs are euthanized than any other.

From what I understand, they have some of the same problems with black cats.

Thanks guys! All is looking good...we just have to make sure we have a new place to move to.

The only thing that's going to be rough is our having to move while living in two places that are 40 minutes apart. *eek* But I'm hitting things now and as soon as we find out that we can move there, we're going to start getting stuff over. I wish there weren't so much stuff to move!

So here's where thing stands. I spoke to our (hopefully!) new landlord today. He's concerned about noise and I guaranteed him that she is a very quiet dog, hardly barks at all, and that someone will be home with her most of the time. By the end of the conversation, he had pretty much agreed to it. And I'm guessing he'll be ok with it since I asked if the rescue could contact him about it and he told me to have them call on Monday since he'll be back from vacation then.

It's all sounding good!

Annie

That sounds like good news so far. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that the landlord doesn't change his mind. I really hope it works out for you - you'd be able to provide such a great home for a dog. I can't even look at adoption sites anymore since I want to adopt them ALL.

Crysania
05-01-2008, 10:47 AM
Oh you and me both Annie! I had a list of like 30 dogs and kept looking at them and thinking "I want you and you and you and YOU!!!" Every sad story gets me. But in this case, I met the dog and thought she was wonderful, so she left more of an imprint on me.

I do hope he doesn't change his mind. Hopefully the rescue can assure him that she's not a barky dog (they even included that in their description on her petfinder page). As long as all goes well there, we'll have a new apartment and the dog to go with it!!

Crysania
05-01-2008, 11:16 AM
Thanks Springer! He did seem like a reasonable guy...I just hope he stays that way when the rescue contacts him. I think my being calm about it and saying I understood his concerns and we would make sure we didn't cause problems reassured him. I'm glad I have a dog in mind or else it might not have gone so well! If we had been living in a place with the dog already, he would have contacted our current landlord, but alas we don't! Our current place is too concerned about animals destroying their lovely (read: cheap and crappy) carpet and woodwork. lol

It is much more often the human tenants that turn the place into a pigsty and leave a trail of destruction behind them:)

I know! This new place is in the university area. You should see what the floors look like. Nice hardwood floors that are all scratched up horribly. The cabinets look like a cat got to them.

And this guy is worried about noise? What about the noise of partying undergrads? My SO used to live in the neighbourhood there and had to deal with a lot of that. I'd think that a loud party all night would be more obnoxious than a dog that barks during the day some! I mean, turn up your music and keep your windows shut and you won't hear a barking dog. ;-) We had partying students who lived across from us in our place and they kept us awake many a' night!

We will do, although right now we cant in our rented house.

But next year we're going to buy a house, and then we'll go and rescue a dog at the local shelter.

Hopefully you dont get any problems with the Landlord.

Yay rescue dogs! Ours is coming from a rescue too. She was just dropped off at a shelter, no clue exactly where she came from but she is incredibly well-behaved. She was only one day from being euthanized when they rescued her. So sad!!

I'm just horrified by the story about the owners who left their dog in a crate to starve. Do people get prosecuted for animal cruelty when they do these things?

I've watched a program on Animal Planet where animal control people go out and rescue animals and the people are prosecuted. Sometimes it's a difficult program to watch because the neglect and cruelty are so extreme. It's nice to see those people get the book thrown at them. It can involve some jail time but not nearly enough.

That's exactly the truth. They usually get a little jail time or a fine or a slap on the wrist. The best thing that comes out of it is that they are barred from owning any more animals. But it's never enough. If they starved a child to death they'd be in jail for the rest of their lives. But because it's "just" a dog or cat or hamster or whatever, they don't get much. It makes no sense to me. Cruelty is cruelty, no matter who the recipient is.

The Animal Precinct shows on Animal Planet are HARD to watch...sometimes I come away feeling good because those animals got a better life. But when you see the shows with the ones who have been killed or don't make it, it's awful. I had to flip the channel away from one that was on recently where they discovered a black lab dead in a car from heat. They zoomed in a closeup of the dead dog! I was horrified that someone let that happened to the dog, but also horrified that a show geared toward animal lovers would show such a thing.

We got our doggie!!! Dahlia is coming home with us in two weeks. *gulp* They talked to our new landlord, who ok'ed it, and talked to one of our references who told them they'd be mad to not give us the dog. They need to talk to one of our other references still, but there's no worry there. So we're now arranging a day and time to go get her!! We can't wait! :D

Now if we can just figure out how to juggle having a new dog, living in one place, while having an apartment somewhere else, and having to move things from that apartment to a new place all between now and the end of June, that would be awesome. :p

Forclosure animals are like eviction animals. One of the sad things that I had to do when I worked enforceables was call animal control to pick up animals that were deserted as a result of an eviction. I haven't done enforceables in three years and don't want to go back

Yep...it just sickens me. How can someone just leave an animal behind locked in an apartment or a house. I heard of one especially cruel case where the locked their dog in a crate with no food or water and left a bag of dog food not far from the cage. The dog was later found dead of starvation. I can only imagine they're trying to punish the people who forced them to foreclose or something.

I just saw this - congratulations! Welcome lifestyle change! ;)

She looks absolutely adorable and I'm sure she'll feel like part of your family in no-time.

My dog is 9 months old today and he is my life. Literally. Apart from work, it's all about the dog. On weekdays, I take him out 40-60 mins before work, 1,5 hrs after work and around 30 mins before bedtime. I take him everywhere, and if I can't take him, I usually don't go. Thank goodness I was never a very social person before - I would have no friends left! We live for the weekends, where we go hiking in the woods. We also take obedience classes and practice tracking work. Yeah, and I keep saying "we". "We bought a house", "We're going out to pee"... When I want to kick back and relax, I surf the net and participate on dog forums. No wonder dog owners are a bit weird.

So watch out! I'm guessing you'll have to invite all your musician friends home to your place to play! LOL

Looking forward to seeing pics of Dahlia.

And we're so going to be like you. Last night David said to me, and I quote: "We're not a couple anymore. We're a family."

That's what happens!:D The SO refers to us as a family too. Well, we are! We have two little boys. Your life starts revolving around them. It has to. We don't stay out too late because the boys need to go out, we take them to Wyoming with us, they stay in hotels with us, and anyone who comes over knows we have dogs and if they don't like it... don't come over.:p

I even wanted to bring the boys for our engagement picture. The SO wasn't having it. BOOOO!!!! I even wanted them at the wedding (not in tuxedos or anything), but the SO nixed that idea. *sigh* They would be leashed and with the maid of honor. He's not going for it. *pouts*

The other day I was going through my photos in an attempt to get them organized and put into albums. Um... I have about 200 photos of dogs (past and present) alone. :o If I don't get rid of some I will have about 3 photo albums devoted to pets. LOL!

You do get a bit obsessed. Who cares, right? It's not like I talk about them all of the time, paint their nails, and throw birthday parties for them. So what if I take a bunch of pictures and insist they travel with us 90% of the time? I want them with me always. I missed them so much when I was gone for a couple of weeks.

Getting a new dog is so much fun! I have such a blast picking out toys, beds, etc.:D

Crysania

I can't even count how many photos of dogs I have. I should be embarrassed. I have a whole freaking collection on flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/crysania4/collections/72157602048756809/). I will have more pictures of Dahlia than any other! LOL

We plan on going to Maine next year...hiking, camping, etc. Even the windjammer cruise we wanted to go on (150' wind-driven schooner!) is dog-friendly. Yay!! It'll be so much fun.

And I will NEVER be one of those creepy dog owners who paint the dog's nails or put "party dresses" on them or sweaters or anything. Dahlia has enough of a coat that she doesn't need a sweater to keep warm in the winter, so she's a naked doggie all the time! LOL

I'm loving picking out things for her! I need to go get a tag this week with her name and info on it.

They have a great kiosk thing at Pet Smart for tags. Cheap too.

I could spend hours at the pet store buying toys. As it is, I have to restrain myself from buying more. Riley has a basket full of toys and he plays with every single one of them. I always wanted a dog that was into toys. My oldest was never interested in toys. Once in a blue moon I could get him to chase a ball, but he would quickly lose interest. :(

Is Dahlia into toys? Some dogs aren't and prefer to wrestle when it's playtime.

Crysania
05-09-2008, 04:46 PM
I'm not sure yet if she's into toys...I suppose that's something we'll find out. She wasn't interested in the one I had in my back seat when I transported her...but she was no doubt tired and stressed from the trip (not to mention she had been spayed two days before it!). We figure we'll start with a few. I have a soft ball, a big stuffed bone, a kong, and we might get a tennis ball...see if she's into any of it. If not, well, then we won't go overboard with toys then (which would be sad because I love throwing things for dogs!). I'm thinking she MIGHT be into running and fetching things since she's probably a retriever mix. And well, they tend to like to...you know...retrieve. LOL But we'll have fun finding that all!

Yep we'll be at Pet Smart or Pet Depot this week to get a tag. When we first got Teri we got her one that was a shrinky dink tag! It was silly.
