What do you feed your dogs?

Ok, so we are getting a puppy. She is only 6 weeks now so we will not have her home until the end of october. She is a toy poodle, not a tiny, teacup or any of that crap. The breeder estimates she will be around 6 pounds which ,for what I read , is just about normal for this kind of dogs.

Anyway...I have been doing some research on the internet about puppy foods and I am nothing but confused. I want to feed her a good quality food but I am not sure what.

At this point I believe I want to try this one, but there are a few others that also seem good choices. I want some advice from other dog owners.

Also I am unsure whether we should give her puppy food or all life stages food.

These are the other ones I have been looking at too:

- Canidae all life stages
- Innova puppy
- Artemis puppy
- Blue buffalo chicken and rice for puppies.

This is the puppy... :D

Naya and I have been on a good food search lately. Here's the story...

When we decided to start feeding ultra premium we tried Canidae and were instantly sold. All three dogs did well on it and we used if for months. Then out of the blue they changed their formula and the first ingredient is a meal now. All three dogs went south instantly. So now we needed something new.

Next we tried Innova. This made Pete start puking once a day after a week or so. Naya's dogs did ok on it, but nothing special. Next!

Solid Gold Wolf King, which is a large breed. The dogs liked this better. I looked into getting it from my local feed guy (much cheaper) and it turns out he couldn't get it due to boundry reasons. The salesman suggested a similar (bison meat) called Taste of the Wild and gave us a case of free samples. Dogs seem to really like it so they're working on their first big bag.

The brand you posted had some good ingredients. To me the bottom line is make sure it's a grain free food with a real meat as the first, if not first two or more, ingredients. If the dog does well on it and you don't have a problem with the price, then go for it.

And like I mentioned, if you can find an old fashion farm feed store, they can most likely get good foor for you for cheaper. It's a good $5 cheaper a bag. Now I know that isn't much when you're talking about a toy poodle, but for three big dogs it sure helps.

Have fun spoiling your puppy.

We've been feeding Reilly Canidae but I'm thinking of changing because like SD said, they recently changed the formula. I'm not even sure what to switch to because my boy has a very sensitive stomach.

Nutro's Natural Choice. It's a little on the pricey side and I can only find it at Petsmart around here.

Although the Blue Buffalo is nice and I would love to change over to it, we currently have a very picky eater at our house, so it doesn't look like it's going to happen.

I've heard more fish in the ingredients is helpful with sensitive tummies.

Adorable puppy!

No advice about puppy food as I find that it's up to the individual what to feed their dog. You'll hear all sorts of opinions and advice, but it's like having a kid in the fact that you've got to do what you think is best. I'm freaky about dog food with my boys, but I had dogs growing up that ate total crap and lived to ripe old ages. It's tough to say which is the best puppy food.

You can always ask your vet for a few recommendations.:)

Dunring the summer the dogs feed themselves. During the winter we throw a little 'atta boy' their way. we tried the higher quality expensive food but they turned up their noses. the hunting dogs always got good food; we made sure the first ingredient on the bag was chicken or lamb.

Thanks, SD. I'll check into that. :)

Like Goldfire said, it really is a personal decision. I have tried so many foods over the years, and have also fed home-prepared raw and cooked diets. Honestly, the dogs did better on the home-made foods, but that is a big time commitment so it's not for everyone. You can now buy prepared (frozen) raw foods too, which is a great option. It really comes down to figuring out what works for your dog and you...there's nothing wrong with switching foods if one's not working out.

I have never fed the less-expensive, or "supermarket" foods though. If you do any research on dog food, you'll already know why.

My favourite bagged foods are: Innova Evo and a couple Canadian brands that are fish/potato mostly (First Mate, Go!Natural).

I also second SD's opinion on trying to find a local feed store that carries dog food. I also save at least $5-10 per bag on food, they sell lots of great brands, and they are closer to home too! If I want a particular brand or item, they will also look into stocking it.
